My son and I recently traveled throughout Turkey and Jordan, which was very exciting and educational. Bordering
Iraq, both countries are excellent case studies in cultural survival and contrast. The tremendous hospitality we
experienced was life-changing. Our preconceptions and misconceptions were many and we came back with a much
better understanding of this hugely misunderstood region of the world.
Physically straddling Europe and Asia, Turkey uniquely struggles with, yet embraces its European, Asian and Middle
Eastern identities. The country is a blend of old and new, strongly influenced by its ancient historical and cultural
connection to the Christian and Muslim faiths. Turkey continues its struggle for economic stability while forging a
strongly nationalistic, democratic, secular, yet Islamic-influenced political agenda. The results are complicated and
fascinating.
Jordan is beautiful. Our time there is more difficult for us to process and describe. Staying in Wadi Rum  وادي رم with
the Beduoins, a beautiful, hospitable people, was a humbling, intense experience. Please contact us for more
information about our trip and our images. We are currently fundraising for our next trip to the Middle East and would
enjoy sharing our images and experiences to promote peace and goodwill.
